I was on my way in to work. My husband was at home with the kids, and I remember hearing about the first plane hitting the tower. Everyone assumed it was a small plane, and an accident – but there were rumors that it had been something bigger. The second plane hit right as I drove into the parking lot. That was when everyone realized what was really happening. I called my husband and told him to turn on the news, that something horrible had happened. I went into my classroom and turned on the TV. Pretty much every class was watching it, we sat and watched it all day.

We went to the Tempe Beach Park this morning, to view the memorial. Adam and Marie are starting to ask questions about what happened, since they were too young to remember it or understand it. We watched one of the numerous specials on TV this morning, and a little of the memorial in New York. But I don’t think they understood until we got to the park and saw the flags – one for each victim. Some of the flags had boots near them (veterans), some had yellow ribbons (firefighters and police officers). But the saddest were the ones with teddy bears. Those were for the children. There weren’t very many of them – but they were all so young. There were some who had been traveling with their teachers, and some who were with their families. It breaks my heart to imagine having to hold my children and keep them calm once you know how it’s going to end. I can’t imagine the sort of strength that would take, to not panic because you don’t want to scare them. On the other hand, perhaps it would be easier to focus on keeping your children close than on the realization that the plane is going down.
